Scope note: this article explains why services fail abroad and what you can prepare before departure. It is not a guide to defeating regional restrictions, and local law where you are travelling may differ substantially from the law where you live.
When you travel, exactly one thing changes: the network your traffic exits from. Everything else about your digital identity — your account's registered country, your card's issuing bank, your app store storefront, your phone number — stays behind. Services that read the first signal behave as if you have moved. Services that read any of the others behave as if you have not.
That mismatch, rather than blocking as such, is the source of most travel access problems. It also explains why the failures arrive in a scattered sequence instead of all at once.
Which failure corresponds to which signal?
Matching the symptom to the signal tells you whether it is fixable and by whom.

The CAPTCHA case is worth explaining because it feels like a block and is not. Hotels, airports and cafés put many guests behind one address. That address accumulates a reputation from everyone using it, and once it looks like automated traffic, every visitor from it gets challenged.
Why does authentication break before anything else?
Because login risk systems are looking for exactly the pattern that legitimate travel produces.
A sign-in from a country you have never used, on a network with no history, on a device the service may not recognise, at an unusual local time, is indistinguishable from account takeover on the signals available. The system does the correct thing and escalates to a second factor — and the second factor is very often an SMS to your home number, which is the thing least likely to work while roaming.
This makes recovery, not access, the real travel problem. Losing a password is inconvenient at home and can be genuinely locking abroad, because every recovery route runs through the phone number and email you may not be able to reach.
What should you sort out before leaving?
Ordered by how much trouble each one prevents.

The first two rows do most of the work. Almost every "I could not get into my account abroad" story ends at a verification code sent to a phone that could not receive it.
Why is "just use a VPN" not the answer here?
Three reasons, and only one of them is about rules.
It does not fix most of these failures. A tunnel changes your apparent IP. It does not change your account's registered country, your card's issuing country, or your app store storefront, so payment failures, missing apps and recovery lockouts persist unchanged. The signals that break most often are not the one a tunnel moves.
It frequently makes authentication worse. Logging in from a datacentre address, on a new device, in a new country, scores worse on a risk system than logging in from an ordinary residential network abroad. Shared exit addresses also inherit the same reputation problem as hotel Wi-Fi, at greater intensity.
It may breach the terms you agreed to, or local rules. Presenting a false location to obtain access generally violates a service's terms, and some jurisdictions regulate these tools directly. Whether that matters is your decision, but it is not a technicality and it is not free of consequence.
What should you know about the destination?
That legality is not a property you carry with you.
Material that is lawful to access where you live may not be lawful where you are travelling, and the rules can differ sharply between neighbouring countries. In some jurisdictions enforcement extends to individual access rather than only to distribution. Device inspection at borders is also a real practice in a number of countries, and its scope varies.
The general and safe approach is to find out what applies at your destination from an official source before you arrive, rather than assuming your home rules travel with you. Which problems resolve themselves when you get home?
Most of them, which is worth knowing before you spend a trip fighting them.
IP-driven failures — catalogue differences, region messages, CAPTCHA loops — disappear the moment you are back on a familiar network. Card declines usually stop once the issuer sees domestic transactions again. What does not self-resolve is anything you changed in a hurry: a storefront country switched mid-trip can carry balance and subscription restrictions afterwards, and a locked account still needs the recovery route you could not reach. Prefer waiting over restructuring an account from a hotel room.
